selecting the right fencer for your works

LETS LOOK AT THIS SERIOUSLY

Choosing the right fencing contractor isn’t just about price ; it’s about getting a fence that lasts, looks great & is built properly from the ground up.

Don’t Just Go for the Cheapest

Cheap quotes often mean shortcuts. This can include:

  • Undersized posts
  • Poor quality materials
  • Minimal concrete or quick-set mixes
  • Rushed workmanship

A fence might look good on day one, but issues can show up quickly such as leaning posts, gaps or panels failing in strong winds.

MAIN QUESTIONS TO ASK

What materials are you using?

  • What size posts are included?

(1.65mtr= 2.4mtr post, 1.95mtr & 2.1mtr=2.7mtr post, 2.25mtr= 3mtr post)

  • What posts do you offer Galv Steel, Hardwood or Cypress?
  • Do you offer Bitumen Painting to waterproof my posts in the soil?

(If the fencer offers Treated pine posts the answer is NO)

How are the posts installed?

  • How deep are the posts going?

(minimum is 600mm, best is 700-800mm)

  • Are you using proper cement mix, concrete or quick-set?
  • Do you allow time for curing?
  • Are your holes with an Auger for a bigger footprint or shovels?
  • How much cement/concrete do you put in the holes?

(each post should have 10kgs of cement or 2 1/2-3bags of concrete)

  • How are your substrate mixes mixed?

(A mortar mixer is best method for a consistent mix)

What’s included in the quote?

  • Is everything included or are there hidden extras?
  • Removal of old fence?
  • Disposal costs?
  • Gates, capping, or extras?
  • Can you provide me with a list of all material specifications?

How do you handle levels and slopes?

  • Will the fence follow the ground, additional plinth where needed or be stepped?
  • How do you manage uneven terrain?

What clearances do you leave?

  • Is there a gap under the fence (especially for Colorbond)?
  • How do you prevent moisture damage or rust over time?

What happens if something goes wrong?

  • Do you offer a warranty?
  • What does it actually cover?
  • Extra costs? are they quoted onsite or will they be added at the end?

How long will the job take?

  • Start date and timeframe
  • Weather delays
  • Will they finish once they start?

Who will be doing the work?

  • Is it the person quoting?
  • Subcontractors or in-house team?
  • What is there experience level?

Can I see past work or reviews?

  • Photos of recent jobs
  • External reviews (not just on their website)

Final Tips

  • Don't pay cash in hand, we're building businesses here and if its not claimed you have nothing to show when a warranty problem arises.
  • Companies that are not GST registered either just started  or they aren't claiming

If a fencer avoids these questions or gives vague answers that’s usually a red flag.

A good contractor will be open, clear & confident in how they build.
